I purchased this book on a recommendation whilst studying my Coginitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) module at University. During training to be a Person-centred (PC) style counsellor we briefly touched on what CBT was and how it was so different.
I always felt an aversion to CBT, until I picked it in my degree modules to learn more about it. I am very glad I did, as now I understand it’s benefits. I now can offer appropriate CBT style interventions where appropriate with my clients in a person-centres collaborative style.
This book is targeted towards clients who want to use these popular interventions at home, to become their own CBT therapist.
It begins by explaining what CBT is and has explanations of what certain presenting problems look like, e.g. depression, anxiety, anger, phobias etc. Each problem has a chapter following throughout the book and how to treat it. This is also great because it has example case studies which again are followed through till the end to give you an idea of how this may look.
I would say this book is very much a doing book! It has plenty of stages which you can follow to and many areas to reflect of the process which you are going through.
Although I wouldn’t say this book can replace a good counsellor/psychotherapist , I would say if used alongside your therapy it can only be of benefit to the individual. For instance, when working through this book, you may find content which you would like to discuss in more depth with your therapist.
I will certainly be recommending this book to clients!!! I would also say to fellow counselling students to read this book as it is brimmed full of worksheets and has a great description of each of the interventions for certain presenting issues.
