This book is targeted at people who are in families for the second or more time.
This book first covers how coming into a second relationship/marriage can affect the new relationship. Each person involved in the relationship may be bringing unresolved issues from their first unsuccessful relationship into the new. This book has tasks to complete which can help highlight areas in how to improve self awareness and communication that can help in your new relationship.
The second part focuses on where there are children involved. These children from a past relationship bring in a new dynamic to the new relationship. The author ears of the importance of heard feelings from children and how step-families can make it work.
Part three and four four look at the possible inner feelings of each the adults and children in the relationship.
The last chapter is how step families relate to society.
My impressions of the book are good, being in a blended family myself I really felt like many parts of this book were relevant to my own situation.
Although this his book was positive learning, I do feel as though it doesnt accuratly reflect the current society we live in Britain today. The statistics are very dated. This book came out in 1997. It doesn’t reflect on the differences of how second families are affected in the LGBT community. Furthermore, how the second family is more accepted in our community today And other isssues of today’s modern society can affect these relationships e.g economic climates, higher adoption rates etc.
I would recommend this book to clients and fellow counsellors who work with relationship within the counselling room. Although with this recommendation, I would explain the age of this book and its relevance to the modern age.
