This book is focused on the implementation of Internal Family Systems (IFS) in a therapy setting.
The concepts of this book generally cover that inside us we have parts of ourself that can come into conflict with the others. Protector parts can jump in to react in certain ways, which at a time in our lives would have been useful. However the strategies these protectors use now may be hindering our current life. It’s all about the acceptance and gratitude towards these parts which without them we may not have ‘survived’. This acceptance may lead the way to the exiled/wounded parts which have been hidden to come forward and be accepted and healed.
One thing I really loved was that the system aims to accept clients in a non-pathologizing/ medical model way. The authors explain that the ‘symptoms‘ of personality ‘disorders’ for instance are just parts that have been put in place to protect the hurt part of the client due to their experiences.
I found this book a very interesting read, especially as it introduces the concepts and applies them to case study types examples to real life clients.
The book also provides worksheets, exercises and meditations to use in practice.
Overall, it is a worthwhile read and can be applied easily within other models of therapeutic intervention styles. I, myself have used some of the concepts in this manual to the benefit of work with clients.
I would recommend this book to counsellors and psychotherapists whom clients have internal conflicts and have unresolved trauma.
