Book Review: Basic Counselling Skills: A Helpers Manual by Richard Nelson-Jones

Updated: Mar 21, 2022

I am very fond of this book! I think it is due to being the first ever counselling related book I purchased and read before decided to start my training.

It is a very good basic overview of what counselling is, and also what it isn’t! Many people over the years when I tell them my job role say to me “Well it’s just listening isn’t it, it’s not hard!!”. Honestly if I had a penny for each time I have heard this! This book also cover topics of skills which need to be developed, diversity, knowing when to make a referral and ethical considerations.

It is quite an easy flowing book and also has many activity and self reflection points which is very useful when considering to train. My reason for not giving this book my top marks is ‘as described’ very basic. Further reading on specific skills is needed even for a level 2 introductory course.

I would recommend this book for anyone looking at training to become a counsellor/psychotherapist.

4/5
