Book Review: Against Therapy by Jeffrey Masson

I bought this book as it was a recommended core book on my degree, specifically to look at the history of psychotherapy and how patients were treated and how this has evolved over time.

This book is a very interesting and shocking read as it takes the reader through the roots of psychotherapy. From rare patient accounts of being institutionalised in the 18th century to a refreshing criticism of todays Person-Centred counselling.

Masson takes the reader on a fantastic journey of the gritty, unedited past of famous psychologists/psychotherapists which have become household names today. Masson (a historian of psychotherapy) has done much digging to find accounts, letters, publications, research etc. which adds much overlooked context to the injustices of these influential people. Freud, Jung and Rogers are to name a few which are subject to Masons lens and the result is enlightening.

I would most definitely recommend this book to anybody training to become or practicing as a counsellor/psychotherapist, psychologist or psychiatrist.

5/5
