I have read this book quite a few times and doing this review aftery last full read of it. I always come away with a bit of information that I didn’t pick up on the previous read. This book has a fantastic mix of empirical research and real life client studies. It makes something which can be so abstract appear tangible due to the writing style and application.

When reading this, I throughly enjoy the psychology behind the therapeutic relationship and this book really adds to Carl Rogers 6 conditions. It’s refreshing and modernises person-centred relationship theory. When reflecting on the content, I feel it makes complete sense to prioritise the connection between client and therapist above all else. The authors also touch on how important it is to meet your clients where their own process is when they have experienced trauma, rather than trying to rush them along.

I would recommend it to anyone who is training to become a counsellor/psychotherapist in the later stages of training where they are seeing clients. The reason why is, when on early levels of training, much of what is spoken about in this book may overwhelm students and they may not be able to relate to the client work examples. There is no harm in reading it of course, however I would recommend to dip into it when in placement.

5/5
